Many have mixed feelings about the Irish. Some see them as enemies of their nation, others as their friends in Christ. In this book we are only interested in the salvation of their souls. Hundreds of Irish have been saved in the past. Yet, in spite of this many Irish generations have struggled through spiritual darkness, steeped in religion and starved of truth. It was reckoned in the 1960s that Ireland was ‘the world’s most devoutly Catholic country.’ Thousands of priests and nuns were pouring into her countryside and unto mission fields all over the world. Today over 80% of the Irish population still identify themselves as Roman Catholic.
But the tide is turning. Only handfuls of the Irish are now training for the Church of Rome. Interest and attendance are dropping among her people. Indeed it appears in recent days that many Irish are no longer swayed by the Roman Catholic Church. This situation has brought about a fresh opportunity. There is a new movement among Christian circles today to reach the Irish for Christ. It hasn’t been as good for a long time. The Irish are more open and doors are opening for the gospel among them today. Those with another gospel are also seizing this new opportunity. We need to get in with the gospel today. There are areas with 10, 20 and 30,000 souls without a gospel witness.
There is something we can do. Many of these things are discussed in The Irish Challenge. We can start praying for our Irish neighbours or we can go to them. No situation, no area or no soul is unapproachable. There are rows of houses, streets and countrysides, various venues and events we can visit. There are marketplaces, shows, hotels, hospitals, residential homes, schools, monasteries, prisons and many other places where we can reach souls. We can take a handful of Bibles or tracts, preach or testify or sing in the open air or indoors. We could use the radio, the internet, the press, posters and newsletters to get the gospel across to them.
If you want to reach souls for Christ especially among some of your Roman Catholic neighbours or you are anxious for the Irish population - then this is the book for you. Here’s a collection of articles; some biblical, historical and biographical sketches; quotes; facts; figures; maps; pictures; teaching; illustrations and arguments regarding missionary work among all denominations in the past. It will challenge any indifference, any inactivity or any shortcomings among our people. It encourages everyone to enter into more fields and use more tools to reach souls especially among the Irish population today.
